According to a statement released on Wednesday (Apr 30), the affected products were available on local e-commerce platforms. Among them are Loboose High End Super Candy and Premium Thundercat Super Candy, both of which were promoted for their alleged sexual enhancement effects. Laboratory tests revealed that these products contained tadalafil, a prescription-only medication commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). While effective under medical supervision, tadalafil can pose significant health risks when consumed without guidance. The drug can cause potentially life-threatening side effects, especially for individuals with pre-existing heart conditions or those on heart medication. These risks include heart attacks, strokes, low blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, headaches, and priapism – a prolonged, painful erection that can cause permanent damage. SFA stressed that tadalafil should only be consumed under a doctor’s supervision and warned consumers against self-medicating with such products. In a separate finding, SFA also flagged two products marketed for weight loss, metabolism boosting, and detoxification: Lomie Peach Berries Blossom Fruity Tea and Urbanism Candy. The tea product was found to contain sibutramine, a banned substance in Singapore since 2010. Sibutramine was withdrawn from the market due to its link to an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. It is also associated with severe psychiatric side effects, such as hallucinations and psychosis, as well as seizures in some cases. Meanwhile, Urbanism Candy contained both sibutramine and sennosides. Sennosides are typically used as laxatives to relieve constipation but are not approved for long-term use. Prolonged intake can lead to chronic dehydration, abdominal cramps, and long-term constipation. “SFA has worked with these online e-commerce platforms to remove the listings of the products and issued warnings to the respective sellers to stop selling the products with immediate effect,” the agency said. It added that consumers who have purchased or consumed these products should stop doing so immediately and consult a doctor if they feel unwell or experience any side effects. Checks by CNA found that most of the products were already listed as out of stock on Carousell, one of the platforms previously hosting them. SFA reminded the public that food products containing potent medicinal ingredients should only be sold as health products regulated by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA). It reiterated the importance of purchasing food, supplements, and health products only from reputable sources and with proper labeling and approval. The agency continues to monitor food safety closely and encourages the public to report suspicious products or adverse reactions to the authorities.
