To Request an appointment with Dr. Schneider: http://referdrschneider.com People have various reasons to go on a diet. It can be for better health. It can be so their clothes can fit better. It can be in preparation for a big event. I'm pretty sure if you ask someone who's dieting, they won't tell you. It's so their feet can get smaller. My name is Dr. Andrew Schneider, and I'm a podiatrist in Houston, TX. Losing weight can have many effects on your feet. Generally, they're all good. Weight loss tends to affect the shape of our bodies differently depending on where we put the pounds on. But one thing that often goes unnoticed is how much weight loss affects our feet. So do your feet get smaller when you lose weight? The answer is yes. Weight loss leads to less fat distribution throughout the body, meaning there are fewer pockets of fat around certain areas like the buttocks, thighs, and even the face. This could lead to a reduction in volume, which affects how much space is left for a fat cell to expand into. As a result, the size of our feet may decrease slightly, especially if we're losing weight quickly. Now, the overall bony structure of your feet doesn't change, but the amount of soft tissue, the muscles, ligaments and connective tissues decreases. You probably won't see the difference, but you may find that your shoes fit a bit looser than they used to. There are several factors that influence whether or not your feet will shrink after weight loss, including your starting point, the amount of weight loss, and how fast you lose it. Some experts say that losing 10% of your total body weight can actually lead to a decrease in your shoe size. There are other benefits to weight loss that trumps a slightly smaller foot. As you lose weight, you reduce the stress on your foot. Being overweight can cause your foot to flatten and lead to overpronation. Less weight on your feet will ease the stress and let your feet stop having to compensate. Weight loss can also reduce the force delivered to your feet with each step. When you take a step, there are two forces coming into your feet. One of the them is the force hitting of your foot, hitting the ground. The other is called the ground reactive force. That's the force that the ground sends back up into your foot. It's about 120% of your body weight. If you're running, it can be as much as three times your body weight. One published study shows that a 10% decrease in your body weight can result in a substantial reduction of the impact coming into your feet. With each step, this can decrease any foot pain you may be experiencing. Finally, losing weight wlll improve your health and reduce the possibility of developing type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is common with people who are overweight. With diabetes can come circulation and nerve problems, both of which can affect your feet. If you have reduced blood flow to your feet, it not only makes your feet tired more quickly, it also puts your feet at risk. Add to that, the numbness caused by the peripheral neuropathy. Together it's a combination that can cause diabetic foot ulcers to form. These are difficult to heal and may lead to losing parts of your feet. So losing weight does a lot more than reduce your shoe size. There are many benefits. Not the least of which is preventing diabetes and keeping your feet healthy. #fatfeet #footweightloss #shoesfitbig 00:00 Introduction 01:06 Does weight loss make your feet smaller? 01:50 What determines how losing weight may make your feet smaller? 02:10 Benefits of weight loss on your feet 04:14 How to connect with Houston podiatrist Dr. Andrew Schneider
