Janelle Brown, star of the reality TV show Sister Wives, has been sharing updates on her weight loss journey on social media, a 175-lb journey so far that has captured the attention of fans and followers alike. The mother of six and wife of the series’ spiritual leader Kody Brown has long struggled with her weight and body image, and wants to focus on her health now. Janelle Brown has always been honest about her weight issues, but she never felt the need to make a change until now. The years of yo-yo dieting, followed by periods of bingeing, and gyms she signed up for but never went to, made her realise that something else needed to change for her healthy lifespan. She needed much more help and support than what she could get on her own. Thus, a nutritionist and a personal trainer came to the rescue.
The hardest part at the very beginning of her transformation journey was finding peace with food and exercise. The years of emotional eating and negative self-talk were not so easy to overcome with a quick ‘now, I’m different’. Janelle had to work with her support system to slowly implement healthier alternatives and build a positive relationship with her body.
And as Janelle started to see results that rewarded her hard work, she also began to experience changes in her energy and mood. Eating well and moving every day began to boost her energy and her confidence in her body. This, in turn, made it feel easier to continue to push herself toward her goals, no matter how hard.
Breaking Through Plateaus
However, Janelle encountered setbacks just as most people do on a weight-loss path – times of frustration where she could not lose a pound. Although feeling the tug to give up, she found the resilience to revisit her destination, discussing her progress with her counsellor, and revising her strategies. With these tools, she was able to push through those barriers and continue on her ultimate goal.
One of the most important lessons she learned was that there will be days that are tough, and that she needs to practice self-care. Weight loss is not always a consistent journey and that can be normal. Self-compassion and being kind to herself through the tough and possibly discouraging times meant that she would be able to keep plugging forward instead of getting derailed if she experienced some short-term weight gain.
She cleared every plateau she ever had, and doubled her weight-loss speed by the time she reached her goal. Here’s how she did it: My family was so supportive! They did their best to not to eat around me so I wouldn’t ever be tempted to cheat. I was so healthy – I didn’t stop until it was complete.I did it because I wanted something that I’d never had before. In my entire life, I didn’t ever have a system like this to follow. I was following a system but it didn’t have the right ingredients and there were no instructions. If it didn’t go well, you mixed the ingredients again. That’s not a system. So, when I tried this, I just kept on going. A friend of mine once asked me why I was doing it since I could lose more weight if I did more exercises. But I’m not running marathons.
