Muscle mass and strength are crucial for long-term health and wellness. Muscle enables us to move and perform daily tasks, from cleaning the house to lifting luggage. It also helps prevent falls and broken bones, maintaining our independence and quality of life. Beyond mobility, muscle plays a vital role in metabolic health, regulating blood sugar, and insulin sensitivity, and maintaining a high metabolism, which can prevent diabetes and heart diseases. Losing weight is only half the equation. We need to preserve and build muscle to ensure the health benefits of fat loss are not lost. Resistance training and higher protein intake are essential. The current recommendation of 0.8g/kg of body weight per day is only enough to survive. To thrive, we should aim for around 1.6g/kg. Ultimately, focusing solely on weight loss can lead to undesirable outcomes in the future. Preserving and building muscle is key to maintaining your health, independence, and quality of life as you age.
